To the Maine eventing community: The summer is flying by and July 27 is the Opening date for entries for the only 3 phase Horse Trials held this year in Maine. We have organized horse trials here at Rusty Knees Farm every year (missing only 2 years!) starting in 1988 right up through 2014. The 2015 event will be held on Sunday September 6. (click here to get to the omnibus for more information) What on earth keeps us motivated to keep doing all the work required to put on an event? Our reward is certainly not financial (no amount of money could make me do this every year!) but it comes with seeing how three phase event riding, like no other type of competition, encourages the development of real horsemanship and connection with the equine partner. Eventing requires a horse to be relaxed and submissive in dressage as well as eager and bold for the jumping phases. Eventers are well-rounded riders, good people and a pleasure to host here at our farm. Thus we continue…
But, I would like to ask two favors:
First: Help keep us motivated to prepare for this event. Let us know that you support eventing in Maine and that you want us to keep doing this.
Please send in your entries BEFORE AUGUST FIRST. Opening Day will become OPENING WEEK, and any entries postmarked in July may subtract $10 from the entry fee.
Enclose a check for $65 with your MeCTA entry form and copy of Coggins test.
Second: Come help with event prep. We are offering $10/hr work off your entry fee. If you would like to school the xc, stay after you school and work and there will be no schooling fee.
The cross country course has over 40 fences, some permanent and some portable, and each one has to be inspected, repaired, painted/stained, trimmed and flagged. With the haying complete, we are ready to tackle the work. I try to get some part of event prep accomplished every day, now till the event. Please give me a call 207-717-7743 and lend a hand.
Thursdays August 20 and 27 will be general work days. If you have a few hours free, give us a call. You may not believe how much your help will be appreciated!

8/31 Snowfields Ride Times Posted Here!!
Snowfields Horse Trials Urgent Update from Peggy Paine, Event Organizer.
Snowfields received 7' of rain this week causing us to make the extremely difficult decision to re-schedule the event to Sunday, August 31, 2014. We truly know how disruptive this is to your competition plans, however, we cannot control the weather - we've tried!
Some of you won't be able to make this date and we will be offering refunds; amount to be determined later today.
Those of you who plan to ride on 8/31 need only confirm your intent with the secretary, Tracy Dahlgren, by Tuesday, 8/19/2014 8pm, though please don't wait until the last minute!
Wait list competitors - once the currently accepted riders have confirmed their plans with Tracy, remaining spots will be prioritized for the wait list.
If spots remain after wait list has been gone through, they will be offered up for entries.
We are all disappointed to have to do this - we've invested huge amounts of time, money and effort to be ready for this weekend. I spent several hours yesterday digging drainage ditches to drain the course. The parking area had a water moat surrounding it and had been mostly flooded over, many areas of the XC course had standing water and all of the low water spots had flooded their banks about 5 feet on either side of the water path.
Due to the overall wetness of the entire facility and the amount of damage done to the XC track during this summer, Patsy O'Brien, the owner of the property, will not be allowing access to the XC course for schooling prior to the re-scheduled event.
Snowfields is now closed to all riding until the event. This includes the xc course (even if not jumping) and dressage ring. There has been a large amount of rain this week and the grounds need time to dry out before the event on 8/17.
Snowfields XC Closed as of Friday 8/8 at 8 PM. We had hoped to keep it open until 8/12 but due to the remaining repair needs and condition of the course, we must close it to all use prior to the event.
Snowfields Horse Trials Entry Status - times will be posted here when they are available the week of August 11.
Infinity Farm 2 Phase on August 10 has been cancelled.
Shoofly Ultimate 2-Phase - please note that the Intro division at Shoofly will ride the USDF 2011 Intro Test B dressage test. The omnibus incorrectly stated test A.
